The festival began in 1972 and the first event included only thirteen balloons. The entire event was launched from a shopping mall parking lot. The balloons were so popular and they create such and amazing scene, back-dropped by the beautiful New Mexico sky and landscape, that the fiesta quickly caught on and grew quickly. A specialized field was built and today Balloon Fiesta Park launches events throughout the year. The Balloon Fiesta remains the most popular of these and also the largest, drawing in crowds in excess of one hundred thousand people. And one of the thrilling aspects of the fiesta for the spectators is the thunderous roar of the burners when they are lit and the joy of walking through the park as the balloons ascend above.
