Pilots are human – though we are often held to higher standards than the majority of the population. But we are just like everyone else; we enjoy a night out, a good time. Occasionally we mess up. Drinking too much or worse. What are the consequences of a pilot receiving a DUI?
DUI’s or Driving Under the Influence are given to intoxicated drivers. That is drivers who have a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.08 or greater. Police will stop drivers that they suspect are under the influence and give them a range of tests. These can include tests measuring coordination and breath tests. If the breath tests show a BAC that is over the limit then the driver can be charged with DUI.
A pilot is also a citizen and must follow the state and national laws. If they are charged with DUI then they are in a similar circumstance to other citizens. They should contact a DUI attorney and go through the process. They should also notify the FAA in Oklahoma City within 60 days of the conviction. The quicker this is done the better. Failure to report can result in suspension. Any DUI conviction should also be included as part of your medical application.
If your are applying for pilot jobs will a DUI affect you chances or in fact end your career? Airlines do hire pilots with DUIs. It all depends on the circumstance and your other violations. If they see it as a blip on the landscape you will have more chance than someone with a pattern of convictions. A DUI may hinder you from flying to certain destinations though. The best bet is full disclosure of all events. In other words do not try to hide anything.
