Anyone who considers practicing law or studying law is in for a challenge that will last the rest of a lifetime. It’s one of the more fascinating fields of study, and offers enormous opportunity to use multiple talents simultaneously. Although it can be tedious, frustrating, and exhausting, it is also extremely rewarding. Most people who are looking at the beginning of a career in law already understand the difficulty of the task at hand, but in Arizona there are even more challenges. In recent years, there have been a number of new legislative actions that have gained national attention. The unique and lively history of Arizona also includes many recent attempts to put forth measures that have been stopped by higher courts. It’s not a dull place for law, that much is certain.
For students, it is an excellent place to begin a career, and it’s also a pretty rewarding place to spend a career in law. With a number of law offices in Phoenix, particularly, there are opportunities, and with the universities, there are always new crops of hopeful young lawyers looking for the chance to show their talents. Anyone connected with law in Arizona, then, whether they be students, assistants, or practicing lawyers, will have to negotiate the law libraries in the state. Fortunately, there are many. The University of Arizona and Arizona State University have excellent law libraries, as their degree programs are very highly acclaimed. The Cline Library at NAU is also very good, and gives students in Coconino County access to lots of information.
Anyone with the desire to become an Arizona lawyer as the ultimate goal will want to start making connections with the people at the Arizona State Library connected to the Secretary of State’s office, as well as the Law Library connected to the Judicial Branch in Maricopa county. These will have more obscure holdings, as well as providing evidence of the complex, and often rather colorful, history of the laws in Arizona, from the past century to the present.
